Azure AI & Integration Developer (Intelligent Document Processing)

Chicago, IL / Remote · Contract · Posted June 8, 2026

About This Role

We are seeking a specialized Azure AI & Integration Developer to architect and build the core intelligent processing engine for a high-profile government document digitization and redaction initiative. You will focus on developing the backend "brain" of the operation — training and deploying Azure Document Intelligence models to extract critical metadata, designing a policy-driven automated redaction engine, and building secure, scalable APIs for front-end consumption. This is a strict 4-month engagement requiring deep expertise in cloud-native architectures, AI/ML services, and enterprise-grade security.

**Intelligent Metadata Extraction & Document Understanding** - Design & train custom Azure Document Intelligence (formerly Form Recognizer) models to extract predefined metadata fields (case number, name, dates, document types) from scanned and decontaminated documents - Build and refine serverless processing pipelines using Azure Functions for document intake, OCR enhancement, and data extraction at scale - Implement validation routines to assess and improve extraction model accuracy, with attention to damaged or poor-quality source documents

**Policy-Driven Redaction Engine Development** - Architect a flexible, rules-based redaction engine that programmatically identifies and obscures PII and sensitive data according to configurable compliance policies (HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA) - Build comprehensive audit trail logging for every redaction action — timestamps, policy applied, and legal justification - Automate policy annotation of redacted documents with legal basis and policy references

**Secure API Development & System Integration** - Build and document robust RESTful APIs using .NET Core/C# to expose extracted metadata, redacted documents, and processing status - Configure Azure Key Vault for secrets management and implement Managed Identities for password-less service-to-service authentication - Integrate with Azure Blob Storage, Cosmos DB/SQL Server, and Logic Apps for workflow orchestration

**Performance Tuning & Cloud Cost Management** - Architect for scalability using Azure App Services or containerization (AKS/ASE) to handle fluctuating document volumes - Monitor and tune AI model and pipeline performance for speed and cost optimization

**Required Qualifications** - 7+ years of software development, with 3+ years focused on Azure AI and cognitive services - Proven hands-on experience with Azure Document Intelligence (Form Recognizer) — building and training custom models - Strong experience with Azure Functions, Azure Logic Apps, and Azure Blob Storage - Expert-level proficiency in .NET Core / C# for backend services and APIs - Strong RESTful API design experience - Proficiency with SQL Server, Entity Framework Core, or Cosmos DB - Experience implementing Azure Key Vault, Managed Identities, and RBAC - Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality code within a fast-paced timeline

**Nice to Have** - Experience handling sensitive data (PII/PHI) in regulated environments (HIPAA, GDPR, CJIS) - Government project experience

**What We Offer** - Cross-industry project exposure: government, healthcare, Fortune 500, startups - Competitive contract rates - Professional development and career growth paths - Collaborative, innovation-driven culture since 2003
